I beg to differ.

Facebook is for Friends first and foremost

Most people are on Facebook because other people they know (and sometimes love) in real life are also on Facebook. They like to stay connected. Facebook friends are much more closely related to each other than Twitter followers. And that changes the rules!

Personally i prefer to share my Facebook profile only among friends, former colleagues and generally people i know personally or otherwise respect. A lot of people are like me. I don't like to befriend some developer of a cool iPhone game on Facebook if i can just follow him or her on Twitter.

Facebook is great for your Products

Your Product - your App, Game, or even your Services - should have a Facebook Fan Page or Group. You can use that to promote your Product. Fan Pages and Groups are like Twitter Lists. You can join them easily, you don't have to interact with the people who also joined, there are no obligations and commitments. Usually people simply express their preferences by joining a Facebook Group or Fan page which is why you want to have one.

If it's a great product and you market it right, your Page or Group posts will be shared by Fans and Group members to their friends. The great benefit of that is that it's the person's real friends who see these shared posts and they are much more likely to check out whatever their friend is posting.

The same goes for your friends too - if you let your friends know about your product they'll be the most eager group to pass it on to others. They may not end up buying your product but just because they like, love or respect you they're inclined to share what you post with others.

  1. +1 to Ray’s comment. I’m curious on what the impact of press releases are. I suppose if a media outlet comes across the release and writes an article about your game it’s worth it…

Haven’t seen this comment yet. Actually I don’t think Press Releases are very helpful unless you do all the other things as well. A Press Release with nothing to show for will get you close to nothing. With a press release kit maybe someone might pick it up.

I guess in most cases it’s preferable to do your own Marketing first, Youtube videos, website, and what not. Only if your App or whatever you are promoting already looks promising with all marketing aspects covered well might a Press Release give you some traction. By itself they won’t do squat.
